Voyage description

This southbound voyage takes us with the prevailing winds from the grand city of Genoa to the historic stronghold of Portoferraio in the Tuscan Archipelago, and on to the vibrant piazzas and colorful markets of Civitavecchia.

Our adventure begins in Genoa, a city of contrasts with its grand architecture, sparkling light, and shaded cobbled streets, often called the “Gateway to the Côte d’Azur.”

As we sail towards Portoferraio, you can help the crew hoist the sails. Steering a 68-meter sailing ship and feeling its response to the helm is an unforgettable experience. Our crew loves to share their sailing knowledge and will encourage you to get involved.

Knot-tying lessons are a fun way to learn a new skill while sharing stories with fellow sailors. If the weather allows, you can also climb the mast or relax on the bowsprit. A sunset drink on deck is the perfect way to end each day.

Portoferraio, the capital of Elba Island, combines history, culture, and nature. Whether you’re exploring ancient fortresses, visiting Napoleon’s residence, or relaxing on idyllic beaches, there’s something for everyone.

All too soon, we sail for Civitavecchia, whose entrance is guarded by the Fort of Michelangelo, a 15th-century fortress with six-meter-thick walls. Today, it draws tourists instead of keeping invaders out. After disembarking, explore the National Museum and the historic town center, with the colorful San Lorenzo market nearby.

*Travellers must be between 14 and 80 years old on the date of sailing to be eligible for the trip.

  • Genoa, a coastal city in northern Italy, is known for its rich cultural and historical heritage. At the heart of the city lies the historic center, with charming narrow streets called caruggi, where you can explore Renaissance palaces and impressive churches.

Must-see sites include the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the magnificent Palazzo Ducale, which hosts exhibitions and cultural events. The Old Port, revitalized by Renzo Piano, is home to the famous Genoa Aquarium, one of the largest in Europe.

In terms of cuisine, Genoa is the birthplace of pesto, best enjoyed with focaccia and fresh seafood dishes. Additionally, Genoa serves as a gateway to exploring the Italian Riviera, with its breathtaking coastal landscapes. The city retains the charm of an ancient maritime power, blending history, art, and Mediterranean flavors.

  • Portoferraio is the capital and main port of Elba Island, part of the Tuscan Archipelago.  It is a town that combines history, culture, nature, and adventure.  Whether you’re interested in exploring ancient fortresses,  visiting Napoleon’s house or enjoying idyllic beaches, Portoferraio has something for everyone.

The beaches of Portoferraio are the main attraction of a stay here, with clear turquoise waters that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean.

Portoferraio is home to three imposing fortifications that dominate the skyline. They were built by Cosimo I de’ Medici, the powerful Grand Duke of Tuscany, to protect the town from pirate attacks.

  • Civitavecchia, a charming port city on the western coast of Italy, serves as the main gateway to Rome for travelers arriving by sea. Known for its ancient Roman roots and historical architecture, Civitavecchia is home to the impressive Forte Michelangelo, built in the 16th century to protect the city.

The bustling port and seafront offer scenic views, lively markets, and delicious seafood restaurants, making it a popular stop for cruise ships and visitors exploring central Italy. With easy access to both Rome and the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea, Civitavecchia is an ideal destination for those seeking history, culture, and coastal beauty.

The second night of our trip was sky clear enough so we could see all those stars and Milkyway. And we were so lucky that at the same moment, we reached the place with a lot of plankton that was fluorescent. It was a very magic moment.

Many small moments with different crew members made this navigation magical: share the spectacle of a sunset or dolphins playing at the front of the boat, participate in maneuvers, ...etc

I won't forget the long-suffering patient crew member who taught me to tie a double bowline. It took ages but I finally got it, and was able to teach another passenger.

Plein de moments magiques pendant le voyage. C'était impressionnant de voir le bateau depuis le zodiac quand on se trouvait à environ 50 ou 100 m du navire. Super la baignade en pleine mer.
